In Money Magazine‘s ranking of the companies with the best benefits, Google came out on top, placing first in 2016 and second in 2017. Here’s what Googlers get so you can compare how your benefits measure up to the Big Blue standard.

Google Retirement and Savings Plan (Pension and investment plans)

The trend is toward “defined contribution plans,”, in which employee contributions are matched by the employer, and away from traditional “defined benefit” plans, which put a greater emphasis on the employer’s guarantee of a retirement income. Defined contribution plans are “portable,” meaning that you can take the money in it with you if you change jobs or go into business for yourself. Employees only benefit from old-fashioned pension plans as long as they stayed with the company a requisite number of years.

Defined contribution plans come in as many different varieties as Heinz condiments. Most popular of all are 401 (k) plans, which allow employees to contribute pretax-income. Many companies also will match employees contributions. Under certain circumstances, you can tap into your 401 (k) savings for unforeseen expenses. Profit-sharing plans enable employees to share in a company’s success. Likewise, Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) allow employees to purchase company stock at a discount or receive part of their salary in the form of company stock.

Google employees can choose between a traditional pension plan or a 401 (k), which includes matched employer contributions. IBM will match 50 percent of employee contributions up to 6 percent of salary.

Google also offers an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP. The company pays out up to 10 percent of an employee’s salary, depending on yearly revenues. In addition, employees participating in the ESOP can buy company stock for 85 percent of market share price.

Health Care and Health Plans

To clip costs, companies are promoting “managed care” plans and trying to wean employees away from traditional so-called fee-for-service plans in which they were free to choose their own doctors. Employees increasingly are being asked to pay a larger percentage of the cost of their health plan, presenting a Hobson’s choice higher deductibles or higher premiums.

Concerning Google employees, they can choose between a range of health care and dental plans. Employees pay a flat fee a month for individuals and up to twice a month for families, depending on the plan selected. The highest deductible amount can be as high as $2,000 for a family. Reimbursements cover 80 percent of costs for major medical; 100 percent for surgical and hospital costs.

Noogler cohort

Possibly one of the most sought-after companies to work for in the 21st century, it’s no surprise that Google has an awesome onboarding program.

Google hires only the best. Their interview process is notoriously rigorous and that’s if you get past the thousands of other applicants. All of this makes sense — they are a huge player in every niche in tech and have a solid monopoly on the search industry. And they want to stay there. Google can’t afford the unproductive employees, high turnover, or wasted potential that comes with a crappy onboarding program.

1. In-person training (pre-COVID)

Onboarding is particularly important at Google because the inner workings of the company are top-secret, often parodied, and fanaticized. New hires often have a Disney-esque image of their new job. Once hired, these new Googlers or Nooglers undergo a two-week in-person training and orientation program that explains the organizational structure, core technologies and programming practices. Beyond that, senior engineers deliver live lectures on Google practices and culture. during which they talk about their experience and share the “engineering perspective”. This way, higher-ups are better able to establish rapport and reach the Nooglers because everyone shares engineering values and language.

Of course, 2020 has forced Google and just about every other organization on the planet to rethink the physical component to their onboarding process. CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai recently announced that the search giant would have most employees working remotely until at least 2021.

2. Thorough Introduction to Company Culture

A class at Google, Life of an Engineer, is the lifeblood of the onboarding process. It helps developers acclimatize to the norms and and practices that make productive Google employees. For instance, one of Google’s fundamental organizational values is change—something that we can all agree we are more used to these days. Technological and organizational evolution is so rapid that a positive attitude towards embracing new systems and ways of doing things is critical to feeling comfortable and being successful at Google. During the course of the presentation, the new engineers learn their way around available intranet resources, which explain how to become a productive Google engineer. It will come as no surprise that Google uses an internal tool called “MOMA” to serve up these intranet resources through a Google-like search interface.

Other cultural axioms relayed include: “we are all researchers” “learning to find out” and “find role models”. Notice a trend? Due to constant change, employees are advised not to memorize primary information, but rather to understand how they fit into the larger system. That way, a Noogler isn’t left hanging when a process changes. When something changes, instead of worrying, they are confident they can easily find out how to work with the new system or information.

For engineers, a large part of the orientation process consists of browsing the elaborate bank of knowledge the engineering department has created. There are pages for teams, individual engineers, and virtual institutions with courses (see #4). The purpose of the initial class isn’t to relay all the information, it’s to give them an idea of the larger structure and the ability to leverage the knowledge throughout their career.

This perplexity to change isn’t unique to Google. Many growth organizations face the challenge of keeping everyone up to speed in an ever evolving organization. Since MOMA isn’t available to the public, these companies are beginning to leverage knowledge management systems like Obie to provide better access to frequently asked questions and centralize knowledge.

3. Checklists

A company-wide list lets Nooglers know what to expect in the first week to month and beyond. It acts as a reference so developers don’t feel pressured to memorize systems, practices, events and institutions in the first week.

4. CodeLabs

Even the juggernauts hired by Google have to learn how a particular proprietary technology works, so Nooglers attend hands-on tutorials called Codelabs to get up to speed. Of course, these days the Codelabs are held on Google Meet. Presumably a Noogler is an experienced developer so the point of these tutorials is to give them simple tasks to acclimatize to the technology. They’re also used by experienced engineers who wants to periodically refresh their knowledge of different instruments so there’s no shame in attending one. Since Codelabs sometimes lack context-specific information, Google created Codewalks that are hosted by a code’s designer or expert and go over examples and the source code.

5. Seriously, Extensive Resources

Beyond the class, intranet, rookie mailing list, and initial orientation, there is a company-wide glossary so everyone is speaking the same language and a developer handbook so everyone is on the same page stylistically. I won’t give an example here because I don’t want to risk making a complete fool of myself. But to clarify, the handbook doesn’t tell Nooglers not to pair plaid patterns, it determines the notes and hierarchy they code using. Nooglers aren’t required to memorize the glossary and handbook, but everything is there for reference.

6. On-the-job training

The first project assigned to new software engineers is called a “starter project”. The project is supposed to be short (around two weeks) and be a good introduction into a specialized field. Apparently the specialization aspect is less true in practice, but starter projects are low-risk and not overwhelming in the slightest.

7. They have a (functioning) mentorship program

Every Noogler is assigned a mentor who is successful within the company and who has taken a course on typical new hire needs. At first, the mentor is just a friendly face to meet them at the end of their first day and show them the facilities, but their formal relationship spans an average of three months. Google has tried to make mentorship informal, which means some mentors are better than others — and some veteran Googlers have been known to take whole groups of Nooglers out to lunch so they can ask questions.

Google engineers are usually organized in small teams to minimize the complexity of environment. This arrangement allows for close collaborative professional relationships, or cognitive apprenticeships, between the established team members and the rookie.

To overcome the perennial problem that newcomers are afraid of asking “stupid questions,” Google has created NEHEN or “Noogler Engineers Helping Engineering Nooglers,” a dedicated mailing list (although this audit is a couple years old so I’m assuming Google and NEHEN are post-email on this). The list is highly used in the first ten months of a given hiring period: a top poster makes fewer than 10 posts/month, but the list receives an average of 1000 posts per month.

8. They Still Check-in

Even once they graduated from Noogler to Googler, employees send weekly snippets, which are a very short bullet point describing what they did that week. At the end of every quarter, they take part in a self-assessment and set goals called Objectives and Key Results. During the initial orientation lectures, Nooglers create some of these measurable goals, which could be daunting, but the Rule of Thumb is they should achieve 70% of what they set out to do.

Boot Camp Assistant Cannot Be Used

• Bootcamp Download Could Not Continue

Installing Boot Camp drivers is essential for using a Touch Bar and Force Touch with Windows 10 on a Mac, amongst other actions and features. Switching Between MacOS and Windows. Boot Camp allows you to choose the operating system you want to boot up to use during system start, selecting either Windows or Mac OS as desired. Mar 12, 2016.

If you own a Mac and would like to run Windows on your device, you will need to create a Windows 10 bootable USB. You can use your Mac, even if it is running Mac OS to create this. It can also be useful if you want to install Windows on a new PC that you have built or if you have replaced the hard drive on your PC and you need to reinstall Windows 10. There is a range of other reasons as to why you may need to create a Windows 10 bootable USB. This article will show you how to create a Windows 10 bootable USB in 4 different ways.

Use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk. If Disk Utility found no errors or repaired all errors, try again to use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows. Method 1: Use Boot Camp Assistant on Mac

In order to create a bootable USB using Boot Camp, you will require a USB that has 16GB of storage, or more. Please note that Boot Camp is not supported in macOS Mojave and later.

• Insert a USB drive into your Mac.

• Open Bootcamp Assistant on your Mac.

• Tick the box for 'create a Windows 7 or later version install disk' and uncheck the 'Install Windows 7 or later version' option. Then click on continue.

• Download a Windows 10 .iso file from the Microsoft website or another reliable site. Keep this in a location that is easily found (such as the Downloads folder).

• Bootcamp will locate the downloaded iso file automatically however if it is not found, you can use the'choose' button to locate it manually.

• Click on Continue and wait until the USB is formatted and set up to become a bootable drive.

• Once the process has been completed by the Bootcamp Assistant, the USB will have been renamed. You can now quit Bootcamp and then Eject the USB to safely remove it.

This will have created a Windows 10 bootable USB using a Mac that can now be used on your PC.

Method 2: Use Disk Utility on Mac

If you are running an older version of Mac, you can use the built-in Disk Utility app to create a Windows 10 bootable USB drive. As this is only compatible with older versions of Mac OS, it is recommended that you use an alternative method.

• Plug in your USB and open the disk utility tool.

• Right-click on your USB drive on the left and format the drive (which will remove all the data) with MS-DOS (FAT).

• Drag the Windows ISO file to the USB drive and the ISO file will begin to write on the USB.

Method 3: Use UNetbootin on Mac

UNetbootin is free to use and allows you to make a bootable USB drive for Windows 10 using your Mac. Again, like the first method, you will need a USB drive (with a capacity of 16GB as a minimum recommendation) and you will also need to download the .iso file and keep it in a memorable location.

• Plug in your USB drive into your Mac.

• Open Disk Utility and select your USB drive on the left. Click on the info button and write down the device name.

• Download and install the UNetbootin utility.

• Choose the 'Diskimage' button and then click on the '…' button to select the iso file that you have downloaded.

• Set the Type as USB Drive and select the device name of your USB drive that you have noted down earlier.

• Click OK and wait for the USB to be formatted to a bootable drive.

Method 4: Use Terminal on Mac

The Terminal app is more complicated to use than other methods however it does not require you to use a third-party application in order to create a Windows 10 bootable USB drive. Again, you will need a USB drive.

• Connect your USB drive to the Mac and then launch Terminal.

• Type 'diskutil list' and hit the enter/return key to see a list of all connected drives.

• Identify your USB drive and note down the name, such as disk3.

• Run the command 'diskutil eraseDisk MS-DOS 'WINDOWS10' GPT disk3' without the quotation marks and you can replace the '3' at the end with the correct number.

• Download the iso file for Windows 10 and save it in the Downloads folder if it hasn’t been saved there already.

• Mount the .iso image by using the command 'hdiutil mount ~/Downloads/WINDOWS10IMAGE.iso' where you can replace the 'WINDOWS10IMAGE with the name of your downloaded file. Note the name of the mounted iso, which can be found by looking at the terminal. It will be similar to /Volumes/MOUNTED-NAME.

• Next, run the command 'cp -rp /Volumes/MOUNTED-ISO/* /Volumes/WINDOWS10/' where you can replace MOUNTED with the name of your mounted ISO.

• Once the command has finished and your files have been moved over to the USB drive, you will need to run the command 'hdiutil unmount /Volumes/MOUNTED-ISO', again replacing the word MOUNTED with the correct name.

• Close the terminal and eject your USB drive. This can now be used as a bootable drive.

Additional Tip: One Click to Create Windows 10 Bootable USB to Reset Password

If you want to create Windows 10 bootable USB to reset the login password, we recommend a very easy to use tool to you. It is Passper WinSenior. This is only compatible with Windows however it is much easier than using the above methods which require you to complete most of the work. WinSenior automatically completes the process for you so there is a much lower risk of failing when trying to create a Windows 10 bootable USB drive. This is the recommended method when using third-party software. As this tool is extremely easy to use, it can be used by anyone. This is because you do not need any expert knowledge in how Windows works in order to reset a password.

Installing Windows on a Mac should be a piece of cake with Bootcamp, but thatrarely is the case. In fact, I would personally say that Boot Camp Assistantis one of the worst apps that comes with OS X and unlike the rest, it doesn’twork seamlessly.

A few of its drawbacks:

• It only supports a drive with a single partition.
• It often throws very obscure error messages with limited detail.
• It re-downloads 1.6 GB Windows drivers every single time it runs. These areplaced under /Library/Application Support/BootCamp/WindowsSupport.dmg anddeleted and re-downloaded each time Boot Camp Assistant starts processing.

This post did take a lot of work to complie and I did bone my hard drive afew times while trying certain ideas, so please throw out a thanks if ithelped you out :)

Disclaimer: This guide below contains procedures which can potentiallydestroy your partitions and data. I accept no responsibility for such loss soplease proceed at your own risk.

Update (2016-07-20): I have updated this post with further improvementsrelating to downloading of Boot Camp drivers and ensuring that a Hybrid MBR isnot used (which would cause issues when installing Windows).

• An 8 GB or larger USB stick
• A copy of the Windows 10 ISO
• A valid Windows 10 license
• A downloaded copy of unetbootin

1. Start Boot Camp Assistant
2. Select Action / Download Windows Support Software
3. Choose your Downloads directory, enter your password and then clickSave

This will be the only step that we will use Boot Camp Assistant for.

Formatting Your USB Stick

Attach your USB stick and start Disk Utility, select your USB drive in theleft panel under External, click Erase and set the options as follows(exactly) and click Erase:

Name: FAT32
Format: MS-DOS (FAT)
Scheme: Master Boot Record

Turning Your USB Stick into a Windows Installer

Open unetbootin, enter your password, set the options as follows andclick OK:

Diskimage: checked, set to ISO and browse to your Windows 10 ISO
Type: USB Drive
Drive: Your USB drive (you should only see one entry here)

If you see more than one drive listed, you may confirm which is your USB driveby opening the Terminal and typing:

You’ll see your USB drive in the output and it should look something like this:

Once you have kicked off unetbootin, grab a snack while the Windows ISO iscopied to the USB stick. This process takes around 15 minutes to complete.

Finishing Up

When this has completed, you may right click on the USB stick in Finder,select Rename “FAT32” and rename it as you like (I’ll call mine“WINDOWS 10”).

Finally, copy the WindowsSupport in your Downloads directory tothe Windows 10 USB stick so it’s easy to get to after our installation.

In Disk Utility, select your internal hard drive on the left panel, andclick on Partition.

Click the + button and create a new partition of your desired size for yourWindows installation and name it as you wish (I’ll call mine “BOOTCAMP”). Ensure that the Format is set to MS-DOS (FAT) and click on Apply.

Huge thanks to Rod’s post from the superuser post titledWindows detects GPT disk as MBR in EFI boot.

Once you add a FAT32 partition with either Boot Camp Assistant or Disk Utility,your disk is converted into a hybrid GPT / MBR disk which is actually notsupported by newer versions of Windows. In this step, we revert thisadditional change made by Disk Utility by switching back to a pure GPTpartition table.

1. Dowload the latest version ofGPT fdiskby browsing to the version, then gdisk-binaries and clicking the filewith the *.pkg extension (e.g. gdisk-1.0.1.pkg).
2. Install GPT fdisk by running the installer you downloaded

3. Open a Terminal and check the state of your MBR

   If your MBR partition is set to hybrid, please continue with step 4,otherwise if it is set to protective, you may skip the rest of thissection. Simply type q and hit return to exit GPT fdisk.

4. Type p to view the existing partition table and verify you’re workingon the correct disk

5. Type x to enter the expert menu

6. Type n to create a fresh protective MBR

7. Type w to save your changes and confirm the change when asked

8. Type q to exit GPT fdisk

9. Run GPT fdisk to show your disk layout:

   Your partition table should look something like this:

Disconnecting All Devices From USB Ports

This step is critical as I have had rather serious problems during Windowsinstallation when certain external drives are connected.

Unplug everything from your Mac except your keyboard (if wired) and yourbootable Windows USB stick (which we prepared earlier).

If your Mac contains multiple physical drives, you will need to disconnectall disks except the one which you intend to install Windows on or you mayencounter the following error:

Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows, restart the installation.

Booting From the USB Stick

Ensure that the USB stick containing the Windows installer is inserted andthen restart your Mac while holding down the option (alt) key.

You should now be presented with a list of bootable drives. Select the USBdrive (usually titled “EFI Boot”) to begin installing Windows.

Correcting Your Windows Hard Disk Partition

When you are asked Where do you want to install Windows?, select theWindows partition created earlier (which I called “BOOTCAMP”) and clickDelete.

Next, select the chunk of Unallocated Space and click on New to createa proper Windows NTFS partition.

Note: OS X only supports creation of FAT filesystems, so this is why we needto re-create the partition ourselves during install.

Completing the Installation

Allow the installer to complete and boot into Windows.

Installing Boot Camp Support Software

Once Windows is up and running, install the Boot Camp Support software runningWindowsSupport/BootCamp/Setup.exe on your USB stick.

Note: The installer takes a little while to show up, so please be patient.

You may encounter a known issue whereby the Boot Camp Support Softwareinstaller locks up while installing Realtek audio.

If this occurs, you will need to open Task Manager and kill theRealtekSetup.exe process.

Bootcamp Download Could Not Continue

After the installer has completed, answer No when prompted to rebootand install the Realtek drivers manually by running%USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalTempRarSFX0BootCampDriversRealTekRealtekSetup.exe.If you can’t find this file, check any other directories starting withRARSFX under %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalTemp.

Once complete, reboot Windows.

• The latest version of SharpKeys
• The flipflop-windows-sheel binary (see README for a download link)

Mapping Your Mac Keyboard

Install and run SharpKeys and then configure the following mappings tocorrect your Mac keyboard so that it behaves like a regular Windows keyboard:

Function: F13 -> Special: PrtSc
Special: Left Alt => Special: Left Windows
Special: Left Windows => Special: Left Alt
Special: Right Alt => Special: Right Windows
Special: Right Windows => Special: Right Alt

Note: for F13, you’ll need to select Press a key and click F13 on yourkeyboard.

Switching to Natural Scrolling

If you wish to flip scrolling direction to match that on OS X, runFlipWheel.exe and then click on Flip All.

Enabling Num Lock on Boot

Paste the following into a file named Enable NumLock on Boot.reg thenimport this into the registry to enable NumLock when Windows boots up(it doesn’t by default).

Completing Configuration

That’s it, give your machine one last reboot and you’ll have a fully workingWindows 10 installation.

Note: I have found Apple’s Magic Mouse to be extremely unreliable usingthe Boot Camp drivers from Apple. As such, I recommend purchasing a Logitech(or similar) mouse for use in Windows. I have no trouble plugging thewireless receiver for my Logitech mouse into one of the USB ports of my wiredApple Keyboard and it’s so tiny that you can’t see it at all.

Removing the Windows Partitions

If you decide to remove Windows, you may find that Disk Utility doesn’t allowyou to delete the two partitions that have been created by the Windowsinstaller.

This happens due to the fact that the first small partition created is of atype called Microsoft Reserved which OS X’s Disk Utility doesn’t support.

The safest way to delete these partitions is through the Windows installer. Sosimply boot from your USB stick as we did before and when you reach theWhere do you want to install Windows? question, you may delete your“BOOTCAMP” partition and the small 16 MB partition of type MSR (Reserved)just above the BOOTCAMP partition.

Once done, simply quit the installer by clicking the X in the top right cornerof each Window and reboot back into OS X.

Removing the Boot Entry

Even though we have removed the Windows partition, a boot entry will still bepresent when holding down option (alt) during boot.

You may remove these items by running the following in your Terminal:

In the Deus Ex franchise, player decisions have always been built into the core experience so that you can come and go as you see fit. While this applies to just about every system in the game, one key focus is on lethal vs. non-lethal actions when you’re progressing through missions. Much like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, both styles are equally viable with a few caveats in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, but — regardless of the approach you’re personally interested in — keeping a non-lethal arsenal for most of the game is the way to go.

Progressing through Mankind Divided as a non-lethal player is typically a strategy reserved for those who prefer a stealthier, more complete approach to a bad situation. By working through missions without killing, you’ll make the most out of each mission, because a non-lethal approach forces you to look for alternatives and hidden areas which contain plenty of valuable information pertaining to the mission at hand in addition to the main story.

It also means you’ll be spending plenty of time with some of Adam Jensen’s more unique augmentations too — like the TESLA, Social Enhancer, and Smart Vision — in order to put enemies on the ground while they’re still breathing and make sure that key suspects throughout Mankind Divided’s story stay alive to play their part. Such individuals provide an absolutely massive amount of information regarding the state of the world, and by eliminating them you’d be stripping yourself of that experience.

By avoiding confrontation and sticking to the shadows, you’ll discover that you are almost always more in-control of the situations you’ll be facing throughout Mankind Divided as well. Due to the intensity of the human vs. augmented conflict that the game focuses on, many missions you’ll be playing through will actually tell you to try and retain a low profile in order to keep tensions from elevating any higher. So while it might be fun to shoot your way through a bank in order to obtain a document for a friend, it might not be a bad idea to sneak through and only take out a few bad guys in order to maintain both your cover, and your friend’s.

Mankind Divided certainly does take note of violent action too, especially when it comes to the main story missions throughout the game. NPCs and key players will almost always comment on your strategy when approaching missions, with many of them favoring the non-lethal approach in order to keep things under the radar. Obviously, this does depend on the context of the mission — meaning that if you’re attacked by terrorists? It’s probably safe to shoot back instead of sneaking around trying to knock all of them out (which, by all means, you’re welcome to do).

While playing a non-lethal Jensen, you’ll rely heavily on the Stun Gun and Tranquilizer Rifle combined with a few melee knockouts. Like the regular handgun, the Stun Gun is an excellent weapon for close quarters engagements that will instantly knock out an enemy. The Tranquilizer Rifle on the other hand requires a bit more finesse due to a delayed knock out effect — unless you get a headshot. Remember, you’ll also have to hide the bodies of your enemies to avoid any direct confrontation. Their friends will otherwise discover them, wake them back up, and immediately come to hunt you down.

All that said, there are many encounters in Mankind Divided where non-lethal action is going to be extremely difficult to pull off without the right augmentations. As such, you’ll want to make sure to invest in a few specific augmentations right off the bat:

Deus Ex Boss Fight

Smart Vision: This augmentation is key to situational awareness, allowing you to spot and mark targets with the LiDAR Mark-Tracker augmentation through walls.

Glass-Shield Cloaking: This personal shield allows you to walk straight through lasers and enemy lines without being noticed, of which you’ll find many.

Hacking: In Mankind Divided there are three separate hacking skills: capture, fortify and stealth. You’ll want to upgrade these as soon as possible to get into places you shouldn’t be.

Remote Hacking: Like hacking, but from a distance. You can disable cameras, security devices, and more remotely — allowing for safe passage without being seen.

A non-lethal approach doesn’t just feel right; there’s an experience bonus for completing missions flawlessly. Compared to lethal actions, non-lethal ones tend to net you a slightly higher experience gain per action (like knocking out an enemy, or avoiding them entirely). Thanks to this additional experience, you’ll gain access to better augmentations faster, allowing you to boost your capabilities earlier.

It may not seem like the most rewarding experience immediately, but the non-lethal approach to Mankind Divided is certainly more rewarding in the long run. Not only does it help ramp up your augmentations earlier in the game due to a slight experience boost, but it helps to explore each level to its fullest while playing through your missions. The game’s at its best when you’re taking the time to slow down, evaluate the situation, and then execute the perfect plan, but, hey, that doesn’t mean you can’t go wild on occasion if you want to test out a few new weapons during Jensen’s downtime.
